Distributed numerical control (DNC) software connects CNC machines, robots, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), PLCs, and other shop-floor equipment to a central server. It enables the electronic transfer, drip-feeding, storage, and revision control of NC programs and related data such as offsets, variables, and parameters. Platforms support multiple communication protocols, including Ethernet, RS-232, and wireless, and handle mixed fleets of modern and legacy controllers through protocol conversion or hardware adapters. Transfer is bidirectional, so edited programs and tool offsets can be uploaded back from the machine to the master. Check-in and check-out controls, approval workflows, user permissions, and audit trails govern program release, alongside program editing, backplotting, version tracking, and remote access. Many platforms also collect machine data such as status, cycle times, and alarms. They integrate with CAM software to receive post-processed programs, and with ERP, MES, and PLM systems. Unlike CAM, which creates NC programs, or MES, which manages production orders, DNC manages and distributes the programs that machines run.
DNC software replaces manual program transfer by USB or serial cable, which is error-prone and can introduce outdated or incorrect files, leading to scrap, rework, crashes, tool breakage, and downtime. It restores traceability and version control by centralising program storage and revision history, so machinists always run approved, current files and manufacturers can show which program version produced which part during quality or customer audits. Controlled release and permissions prevent unauthorised edits at the machine, while saving shop-floor changes back to the master stops optimised programs and tribal knowledge from being lost. It removes the wasted labour of walking files to machines and the idle time spent waiting for programs, and drip-feeding allows large programs to run on legacy machines with limited memory. By supporting mixed fleets of old and new controllers and bridging the connectivity gap between shop-floor equipment and business systems, it provides the visibility, auditability, and integration that connected manufacturing requires.
