Statistical process control (SPC) software collects measurement data from manufacturing and quality processes, automatically from CMMs, gauges, vision systems, sensors, and PLCs (for example via OPC UA), and applies statistical methods such as control charts, capability analysis (Cp/Cpk, Cm/Cmk), and measurement system analysis, including gauge R&R, to monitor process behaviour over time. It distinguishes common-cause variation from special-cause signals using rule-based real-time alerts (such as Western Electric and Nelson rules), and shows results on operator-facing displays and dashboards that support root-cause investigation. Platforms handle variable and attribute charting, short-run and high-mix production, measurement plans, and traceability by process and part, with reporting and compliance documentation across lines and facilities. They integrate with QMS, MES, and ERP systems. Unlike QMS, which manages non-conformances, CAPA, and audits, SPC monitors whether processes remain stable and capable of meeting specifications.
SPC software addresses the challenge of detecting process drift before it produces defects, replacing end-of-line inspection, which leaves scrap and rework behind, and scattered spreadsheets and disconnected reports. By separating meaningful process changes from normal noise, it reduces false alarms and over-adjustment of stable processes, and shortens the time between detection and corrective action. It removes the time spent collecting and keying data by hand, improves visibility across lines, facilities, and suppliers, and catches supplier quality variation early. Standardised charting practices across sites and auditable quality data make it easier to demonstrate process control and provide the capability evidence customers require, such as PPAP in automotive. The result is less waste, scrap, and downtime, and better yield and compliance with quality standards.
