ecoinvent is a non-profit organization that develops and maintains a widely used life cycle inventory (LCI) database for environmental and sustainability assessments. Founded over two decades ago, the database includes more than 26,000 datasets spanning major industry sectors and geographies, with new content added regularly. The database supports impact assessment across a wide range of environmental indicators, including the 16 impact categories recognized by the EU Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method. Applications include corporate carbon accounting, life cycle assessments, ecodesign, product carbon footprints, and supply chain optimization. ecoinvent data is used by enterprises, software developers, consultancies, database providers and academic institutions. ecoinvent operates as an independent non-profit, with governance and funding structures designed to support its independence from commercial or industry interests.
